Monsoon Malabar is one of the world's most unique coffees - a GI-tagged Indian Arabica transformed by exposure to southwest monsoon winds along the Malabar Coast. This weather-aging process, once accidental during colonial sea trade, mellows acidity dramatically and develops a distinctly full, syrupy body with deep notes of smoked spice, wood and cocoa. Rich, bold and unmistakably Indian - perfect for strong black brews, espresso or South Indian filter. Overview Monsoon Malabar beans undergo a historic monsooning process where harvested beans are exposed to southwest monsoon winds for weeks, transforming their texture and flavor. This traditional method mellows acidity and accentuates earthy, spicy and smoky notes. In the cup, expect a full, rich body with low acidity — ideal for strong filter methods, cafe creams or milk-based drinks. The monsoon exposure creates a distinctive profile that evokes Indian spice lanes and coastal air, making this coffee a timeless legacy brew. Producer Story The monsooning tradition dates back to the 17th century, when Indian coffee transported by sea to Europe was naturally exposed to humid monsoon air during the long voyage, arriving transformed - swollen, golden and mellow in flavour. What was once an accident became a celebrated craft. Today, beans sourced from estates on the Malabar Coast of Karnataka and Kerala are deliberately stored in open warehouses during the southwest monsoon months of June to September. The moist coastal winds penetrate the beans over 12–16 weeks, lowering acidity, expanding the bean, and developing the characteristic earthy spice and cocoa profile. The resulting beans are physically distinct - larger, golden-yellow, and unlike any other coffee in the world. In 2007, Monsooned Malabar received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India, formally recognising its unique origin and processing heritage.
