Coffee Equipment

The grinder and scale usually matter more than the brewer. Good equipment helps you repeat a result, but technique and fresh coffee still matter.

1

Grinder

A burr grinder crushes coffee between two burrs and produces a more consistent grind than a blade grinder.

Consistency matters because tiny particles over-extract and large particles under-extract. A better grinder narrows that spread.

2

Scale

A scale lets you weigh coffee and water. This makes recipes repeatable and makes dialing in much easier.

You do not need a fancy scale at first. You need one that reads grams quickly and fits your brewing setup.

3

Kettle

A gooseneck kettle gives more pouring control for pour-over. It helps you place water where you want it and control agitation.

For AeroPress, French press, moka pot, and cold brew, kettle shape matters less. Temperature control can still help.

4

Filters

Paper filters create cleaner cups by trapping oils and fine particles. Metal filters allow more oils and sediment through, giving more body.

Rinsing paper filters can remove papery taste and preheat the brewer.

5

Brewers

V60 and other pour-over brewers are clear, aromatic, and technique-sensitive. AeroPress is versatile, forgiving, and compact. French press is full-bodied and simple. Moka pot is strong and concentrated. Espresso is intense and equipment-sensitive.

Pick a brewer based on the texture and ritual you enjoy, not because one is universally best.
